Women become self-reliant thru homestead cultivation

Our Correspondent: NARSINGDI, Feb 20: The womenfolk in the six upazilas of the district now do not remain busy only with the daily household works or nurturing the children. They are also engaged in homestead cultivation growing chemical-free vegetables and different fruits using organic manure like vermin-compost. A number of poor and marginal farmers specially women farmers of Shibpur, Polash, Belabo and Raipura upazilas of the district have been able to change their fate in the last few years by growing various vegetables and fruits in their homestead garden. They are growing various chemical-free vegetables as Bean, Brinjal, Korola, Jhinga, Borboti, shosha, Bottlegourd, sweetgourd and other vegetables, They also farming various fruits in their homestead garden as Amrapali,Baukul,, Kazi Peyara, Lotkan, Banana ,papaya,lemon, Multa, Jackfruit and other fruits. Minara Begum, 30 wife of Abul Kashem , Bajnabo union of Belabo upazila and Sofia Aktar wife of Abdur Rahim,Dulal pur union of Shibpur upazila said that during the last ten years they have been producing chemical free vegetables and different fruits in their homestead garden using vermin- compost. They are selling the vegetables and fruits in the local markets and getting reasonable price after meeting the family demands. Like Minara, Lily Aktar of Raipura upazila,Hafija Begum Monohardi upazila Aklima Khaton and Josna Begum of Sadar upazila narrated their story about the farming of vegetables and fruits in the homestead garen and their success. Deputy Director, Departm-ent of Agriculture Exrension, Narsingdi Shovan kumar Dhar said a large-scale promotion of homestead gardening is very important for getting regular cash crops together with meeting the nutritional demands.
