Nayeem records 8-wkt haul for North Zone

Sports Desk The first day of the third round of ongoing Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) looked Mushfiqur Rahim and Marshall Ayub fantastic centuries and off-spinner Nayeem Hasan recording the second eight-wicket haul of his career. In this round of BCL, Walton Central Zone took on BCB South Zone at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground in Cox’s Bazar while Islami Bank East Zone faced BCB North Zone at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in the district. Despite Marshal Ayub’s responsible century, Central Zone faced batting jolt as they dismissed their first innings at 235 against South Zone on the first day. Central Zone plunged into a deep trouble as the lost their first five wickets at 53 runs in the score board after they opted to bat first. Central Zone lost wickets in regular intervals in the face of tight bowing display by the South Zone bowlers but Marshal Ayub kept his nerve cool to stretch his innings with a patient 116 runs off 186 balls with the help of 12 boundaries and two over boundaries that helped Central zone to reach over two hundred runs land mark. Ayub finally fall prey to Mehedi Hasan giving him a return catch in the crucial moment. Cameo Mustafizur Rahman (30 n.o) and Zabid Hossain (21) were the other notable scorers for Central Zone. Mehedi Hasan was the pick of South one bowlers picking up three wickets conceding 78 runs while former national pacer Shafiul Islam, Nasum Ahmed and Abdur Razzak shared six wickets giving away 24, 51 and 62 runs respectively. In reply, South Zone started their first innings not in a good shape as they finished the first day scoring 29 for the loss of two wickets. Irfan Hossain threatened early inroad on South Zone innings picking up the wicket of opener Shahriar Nafees for 10 while Irfan Sukkur fell victim of run out by Nazmul Hossain Shanto. Enamul Haque with 13 and Shamsur Rahman with 3 on the crease the stumps were drawn for the day. Irfan Hossain took one Central Zone’s wicket for 15 runs. They put up 272 runs on the board in their first innings in 82.4 overs riding on the 11th First-class ton by Mushfiuqr. He hit 16 fours and a six while scoring 140 off 157 balls. North Zone lost three wickets in 46 runs. They kept losing wickets on a regular basis, but Mushfiqur kept the scoreboard afloat. Naeem Islam, the captain of the North Zone, was the second-highest runs scorer for his team hitting 31. Nayeem Hassan bagged eight wickets conceding 107 runs in 35.4 overs. His best bowling figure in First-class cricket is 8/48. The other two wickets were taken by Hasan Mahmud. In reply, Islami Bank East Zone lost two wickets just in three runs in 4.1 overs. At the end of the day, Saqlain Sajib remained unbeaten as the nightwatchman.
