Sweet-sour reunion under changed leaderships

JCD makes comeback to DU

VC welcomes, expects peaceful coexistence, BCL accommodative but warns against chaos

News Report: A moment of bonhomie it looked like as the main opposition student wing-Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal-made a comeback to Dhaka University Sunday as their rivals in the ruling camp appeared accommodative. Hordes of JCD leaders and activists chanting slogans got in the sanctuary of Bangladesh's student politics-Madhu's Canteen-after years of stay in the wilderness. Their rivals in the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League's student body, were already in, witnesses said. There were some speeches of mild pungency from both sides, though, outside the canteen. The BCL side made a mention of 'Zia' on allegation of his role in the August tragedy and of 'anti-liberation' students. They issued a forewarning against any bid to make trouble. "If general students resist anti-liberation students, we'll have nothing to do," said acting Chhatra League President Al Nahean Khan Joy. The newly elected JCD general secretary, Iqbal Hosen Shyamol, referred to the remarks made by the rival side and their attitude. After setting their foothold on the common habitat of student politicos, the BNP student activists in a procession went to meet Vice-chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzan in a courtesy call. The VC welcomed their rehabilitation on the campus and expected that there would no cause of disruption to law and order and campus peace. "We hope the congenial academic situation prevailing at the university would be maintained," he told the JCD leaders. Incidentally, the sweet-sour reunion on the DU campus happened after changes in the top leaderships of the two largest student organizations. The immediate-past BCL president and the secretary were axed a few days back as a starter of an ongoing political purge launched by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Two respective leaders next to them stood in. On the other hand, just days afterwards, new JCD central body was reconstituted through direct election. Meanwhile, a tense situation prevailed on Dhaka University campus as JCD, BCL leaders took position on the campus. After a long time, members of new committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and its leaders and activists chanted slogans demanding release of Khaleda Zia and also took position in front of Madhur Canteen of the Dhaka University campus on Sunday. The leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) also took position on the DU campus. Under this circumstance, a tense situation was prevailing on the campus. Leaders of the student wings of the BNP and Awami League chanted slogans in favour of their respective parties. JCD activists chanted slogans demanding release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail while BCL activists chanted slogans in the name of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. But no untoward incidents were reported following their presence on the campus on the same day.
