Dengue onslaught continues

News Desk Dengue onslaught is yet to die down, though there is a decline in the daily casualties. The viral disease claimed two more lives on Saturday and infected 527 in the last 24 hours until Saturday morning. A woman died of the mosquito-borne disease in Rajshahi while another from Sirajganj was declared dead in a Dhaka hospital. Raushan Ara, 55, a native of Kushtia's Doulpur village, passed away during treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 10am on Saturday, said the hospital's Deputy Director Dr Saiful Ferdous. "Raushan was admitted to the hospital with dengue on Tuesday Sept 10. As her condition began to deteriorate, she was shifted to the ICU and died during treatment there." The hospital only admitted one new dengue patient in the 24 hours to 11am on Saturday, said Dr Saiful. Two patients were discharged after recovery during that time. The hospital is currently treating 19 patients for dengue, two of whom are in the ICU. Some 657 patients have returned home after treatment at the hospital this year while three people died during treatment. In Dhaka Combined Military Hospital, doctor MM Masud declared dead 56-year-old Nilufar Yasmin when she was brought to the hospital from Sirajganj in the wee hours, her son Sumon told media. The family took her to the hospital as doctors at the North Bengal Medical College Hospital in Sirajganj recommended it when her condition deteriorated on Friday night, Sumon said. "We referred to the Dhaka CMH as the count of platelet in her blood dropped sharply," SM Nazim Wahid Ullah, a doctor at the Sirajganj hospital, said. The government agency Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research or IEDCR said it received 203 reports of deaths from dengue so far this year. It has reviewed 101 cases and confirmed 60 of these deaths were caused by dengue. The number of dengue patients hospitalised in the 24 hours to 8am on Saturday was 527, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. The hospitals in Bangladesh admitted 672 dengue patients in the previous 24 hours. The situation outside Dhaka showed signs of improvement, with a drop in number of hospitalisation to 156 from 228. The hospitals across the country were treating 2,996 dengue patients on Saturday morning. (Inputs taken from bdnews24.com)
