New drain in capital’s Mirpur area to remove waterlogging

News Report Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam is building a bypass drain from Kalshi to Baulia canal area to eradicate the waterlogging there. Atiqul went to Kalshi at 2.00 pm on Saturday to see the construction work. DNCC chief engineer Brigadier General Zubair Salehin, ward councilor Mobassher Chowdhury and executive engineer Enamul Kabir were present, among others. Earlier, the WASA owned Sangbadik khal/canal and Muslim Bazar canal were cleaned by him to end the sufferings of the local. Almost 90 per cent of the work has been completed already, the rest of the work will be finished within this week. The net worth of the 1188 meter long drain pipe is Taka 5.5 crore. A UNB report adds: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Friday celebrated his fourth year in office highlighting his various achievements. “I’ve initiated a positive change in urban management,” Khokon told the media after an Iftar and Dua Mehfil at Intercontinental Hotel. When he took charge, he said the DSCC coffer was empty and roads were filled with holes and waste, with most of the street lights not working. “We’ve totally changed the city and the development is now visible,” he said. In four years, Khokon said that his administration has installed 41,143 LED street lights and installment of another 15,000 bulbs is underway in 18 newly-formed wards. “We’ve also developed 669km roads, 631km drainage, and 133km footpaths,” the mayor said. “The development of 600km road, 500km drainage and 100km footpaths is underway.” Khokon said the perennial waterlogging problem at Shantinagar, Nazimuddin, Gonoktuli and Bangshal has been solved. He also mentioned his success in the development of parks and playgrounds, bus route rationalisation, construction of passenger sheds and traffic management. Educationist Abul Maksud, DSCC Chief Executive Officer Mostafizur Rahman, Chief Engineer Rezaul Karim, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Jahid Hossain, among others, attended the press conference. The Iftar was joined among others by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Choudhury, representatives of civil society, and ward councillors
