Mashrafe says voting atmosphere peaceful

NARAIL, Dec 30: Tigers captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, the Awami League candidate for Narail-2 constituency, said Sunday's voting had been peaceful in the district, reports UNB. "I have visited almost 30 centres in my constituency and found the atmosphere to be peaceful. There is no sign of violence," he said after casting vote. Narail-2 has 317,844 voters. Jasim Uddin, the district's police chief, told UNB: "We are trying to ensure a good atmosphere for election. Apart from police, over 500 army men, four platoons of BGB, 878 members of RAB are working here." Mashrafe is the only national cricketer to run for Parliament even before retiring from the game. The right-arm pacer is expected to lead the Tigers in the upcoming World Cup in England. Meanwhile, Sumona Haque, wife of national cricket captain and Awami League Narail-2 candidate Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, donated Tk one lakh for the treatment of late police officer's wife Rabeya on Sunday noon. Sumona went to Sadar Hospital to meet Rabeya, wife of Sub-inspector Md Moniruzzaman Mintu, and her newborn daughter in the noon and handed over the money. The mother has another child Tanha, 8, reports UNB. The police officer died of sudden heart attack while performing duty on December 27. Meanwhile, Jasim Uddin (PPM), superintendent of Narail Police, also donated Tk 70,000 and Tk 10,000 on behalf of the deputy commissioner for the later police officer's treatment.
