Hope widens for farmers to engage in optimum production

Our Correspondent JAMALPUR, Nov 8: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a target of brining 21,358 hectares of land under mustard cultivation in the district this Robi season. According to DAE officials said production target of mustard is fixed at 27,552 metric tonnes. A total of 4,706 hectares of land is expected to be brought under mustard cultivation in Jamalpur Sadar upazila this year with production target of 6,071 metric tonnes while 3,355 hectares with production target 4328 metric tonnes in Sarishabari upazila, 3,077 hectares with production target 3,969 metric tonnes in Melandaha upazila, 5,127 hectares with production target of 6614 tonnes in Islampur upazila, 1,931 hectares with production target 2,491 tonnes in Dewanganj upazila, 1,050 hectares with production target of 1,355 metric tonnes in Madarganj upazila and 2,112 hectares with production target of 2,724 tonnes in Bakshiganj upazila. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) allocated 10 metric tonnes of mustard seed in the district this season. According to the Seed Marketing Wing of BADC, under the quality seed distribution programme, seven metric tonnes of mustard seeds will be sold among farmers in the district through its 196 registered dealers. Under an incentive programme, the DAE has already distributed 4,500 kilogram BARRI-14 variety mustard seed and 2,000 kilogram BINA- 4 variety mustard seed among the small and marginal farmers in the district to increase its production. DAE Deputy Director Md Aminul Islam said farmers have already begun mustard cultivation in the district. He said the target of mustard cultivation will be achieved due to favourable weather and availability of mustard seed and fertiliser.
