Improve sanitation, hygiene systems, say speakers

Our Correspondent GAIBANDHA, Oct 30: National Sanitation Month-October 2018 and Globe Hand Washing Day was observed in the district Monday with a call to stop the defecation in open space to improve the sanitation and hygiene systems across the country. This year's theme of the day was 'Sustainable Development and Hygienic Sanitation'. Marking the day, the department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) and district administration chalked out the elaborate programmes in cooperation with a number of non-government organizations. In the morning around 10 am, a grand rally led by deputy commissioner (DC) Sebastin Rema was brought out from Independence Square and ended in front of Zila Shilpakala Academy (ZSA) after parading the main roads of the town. Later, a discussion meeting was also held at the auditorium of ZSA highlighting the importance of the month. DC Sebastin Rema addressed as the chief guest and superintendent of police Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah and acting Sadar upazila chairman Rasheda Begum were present at the event as the special guests. With additional deputy commissioner (General) Rokhsana Begum in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by sub assistant engineer of DPHE Yousuf Ali, coordinator of SKS Foundation Ashraful Alam, regional coordinator of Friendship Abdus Salam and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman. Speakers in their speeches underscored the need for creating awareness among the people particularly chars and river basin dwellers of the district about the use of sanitary latrines, safe drinking water and following hygienic rules for a better and disease- free society. Washing hands especially after going to latrine and before eating accompanied by good hygiene practice could reduce the risk of water-borne diseases like diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, hookworm, and ringworm among the people to a great extent, they maintained. DC Sebastin Rema in her speech said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken up and implemented multifarious activities for the development of public health along with ensuring sanitation facilities in last ten years. The DC also sought whole hearted cooperation of all concerned including NGOs, donor agencies and media to turn the sanitation campaign into a social movement to achieve 100 percent sanitation target in the district in the days of ahead. A large number of students, teachers, social workers, NGO activists including journalists took part in the programmes.
