Crucial BNP rally today News Report

A much-orchestrated BNP rally takes place today in the final phase of their movement for fair polls, amid indications that the format of their proposed election-time government could be unveiled now. Party leaders Saturday said they could spell out a five-point charter of demands, without specifying. However, sources in political circles said three matters-release of BNP chief and ex-PM Khaleda Zia, election-time interim government and free, fair and participatory polls-are on top of their agenda. The BNP and its allies in the 20-party alliance and newly emerging 'greater Crucial BNP rally today From Page 1 Col. 8 national unity' also want parliament to be dissolved ahead of the polls. The rally, previously deferred twice for lack of permission, will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city. "The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) authorities have given us written permission on different conditions to hold the rally tomorrow (Sunday) at Suhrawardy Udyan," BNP publicity affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne said Saturday. The BNP leader said DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia gave the permission as he and party organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad met him at his office around 11:30am. Later, BNP senior joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office said they were given permission to hold the rally from 2pm to 5pm. Rizvi hoped their rally would be successful as their senior leaders would deliver speeches. Party sources said the permission was given based on 22 conditions. Last Monday, Rizvi at a press conference announced that they had sought permission from the authorities concerned to hold a public rally either at Suhrawardy Udyan or in front of their party's Nayapaltan central office on Thursday. But the party rescheduled it on Tuesday for Saturday. Meanwhile, the party on Thursday sought fresh permission from the DMP authorities to hold the public rally on Sunday as the authorities requested it to change the rally schedule and submit a fresh application for the permission. BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will unveil their party's future course of action and strategy at the Suhrawardy Udyan public rally. BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed hinted that their party will announce fresh action programmes from the rally. The party last held its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 12, 2017. Meanwhile, the Awami League-led 14-party alliance Saturday held their rally wherefrom its leaders forewarned against any bid from BNP for unleashing chaos and creating disorder in streets in the 'name of rally'.
