DU VC among 3 sued for contempt

News Report A contempt of court case has been filed against Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman and two others for not taking steps to arrange election of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), despite order of High Court (HC) in this regard. The other accused of the case are: Proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Dr Kamal Uddin. Writ petitioner Advocate Monjil Morshed lodged the case with the HC section concerned on Wednesday. Hearing might be held at the bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam on next Sunday, according to Monjil Morshed. Earlier on September 4, contempt of court notice was served to the three for not taking steps of holding DUCSU polls despite an HC order. A contempt of court rule notice has been served to Vice-chancellor, Proctor and Treasurer of Dhaka University for not taking any steps to hold Dhaka University Central Student's Union (DUCSU) elections despite High Court directives to hold it within six months. The notice said Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, Proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Dr Kamal Uddin will be sued in a contempt of court case if they do not take steps to hold an election following HC directives within next seven days. Advocate Manzil Murshid, lawyer of the petitioners, said the notice was issued on Tuesday. Earlier on January 17, the HC asked the DU authorities to take necessary steps within the next six months to hold DUCSU elections. A writ petition was filed by 25 students of DU in March 2012 seeking a court order to compel the authorities concerned to arrange the Ducsu election. The last time DUCSU elections were held in 1990 leading to the fall of military dictator HM Ershad in that year.
