RMP launches footpath clean drive in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Apr 16: Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) on Monday launched a drive to free the street-sides and footpaths from illegal occupation on Monday as part of its efforts to make the city clean, reports BSS. Police conducted the drive at Shaheb Bazar area, main commercial hub of the metropolis. All illegal occupations from Zero point to Moni crossing were evicted. Aman Ullah, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Model Police Station, said the small businessmen and vendors erect illegal infrastructure on footpath, even on the main roads, regularly making the road dirty. The unauthorized occupation of the roads and footpath also causes traffic jam badly side by side with hindering the pedestrian movement. In phases, police will evict all illegal occupation on roads and footpaths for the sake of freeing the city from traffic jam coupled with reducing the peoples sufferings, the police officer added. RMP Commissioner Mahbubor Rahman said sound health is the most important wealth and urged the citizens to maintain cleanliness to improve city environment and reduce the extent of diseases aiming to build a healthy and prosperous nation. Rahman said: "Our environment is a testimony to the state of our mentality. We indiscriminately pollute our environment. We know that one RMP's cleaning operation is not enough but we have to make an effort to change our habit. We have to remember not only to clean but also to stop throwing garbage to protect our environment". He highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness at office premises, institutions, homesteads and open places in the city since cleanliness is a must to keep air fresh and improve environment. In the absence of adequate awareness programmes and coordinated waste management policy of city corporations, people dump wastes and make streets and public places dirty, Rahman said.
