BNP makes irrelevant comments over: Hanif

KUSHTIA, Feb 23: Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif today said BNP is making irrelevant comments over party chief Begum Khaleda Zia's conviction in a graft case to find solace in the wake of crises, reports BSS. "Khaleda Zia has already been convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. There is no scope for a convicted person to take part in polls. To find solace in the crisis period, the BNP leaders are making irrelevant comments," he told newsmen after exchanging views with local leaders and workers of AL at his residence here. Hanif said the next parliament election will be held in line with the constitution. Those who are eligible for contesting in the election as per law they will take part in it, he added. The AL leader said if Begum Zia becomes ineligible, election will be held keeping her away. Kushtia district Awami League Senior Vice-President and Zila Parishad Chairman Hazi Rabiul Islam, Kushtia town AL President Ajgar Ali and General Secretary Ataur Rahman Ata, among others, were present on the occasion. Meanwhile, Awami League Advisory Council member and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Friday said Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had been bestowed upon the title of 'Bangabandhu' by the cross section of people on February 23 in 1969 as recognition to his supreme sacrifices for the masses. "Around 10 lakh people raised their hands in unison at a grand public rally at Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawarady Udyan) on February 23, 1969 and conferred the title of 'Bangabandhu' on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had spent most of his youthful days in the jail of Pakistan for the emancipation of people," he said. Tofail was speaking as the chief guest at a rally arranged for collecting new members of Awami League at Sadar upazila in Bhola. He said on February 21, 1969 they (Sarbadaliya Chhatra Sangram Parishad) gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the then Pakistan government to free Sheikh Mujibur Rahman unconditionally and he was eventually released on February 22.
