Draft Digital Security Act

Editors Council for repealing all controversial sections

News Report The Editors Council of Bangladesh on Tuesday urged the government to repeal all the controversial issues in the Section 57 of the ICT Act and repeal the Section 32 of the proposed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) law. The Editors Council discussed the draft Digital Security Act 2018 at a meeting at the Daily Star centre in the city with its president Golam Sarwar in the chair. The Editors Council expressed grave concern and resentment over the proposed ICT law that repeals the Section 57 but keeps the controversial issues in it. The proposed law further includes some more rigorous sections including the Section 32. These new sections of the draft ICT Act have punishment provisions including life sentences for the journalists. This will pose serious threat to the fundamental spirit of democracy and freedom of expression, the Editor Council said in a statement. The Editors Council believes that the new draft is draconian and it will harm journalism and gag freedom of expression. The Editors demanded the government to finalise the draft law after holding talks with the stakeholders and not to make any hurry.
