Open gambling in fair

Saiful Islam SIRAJGANJ, Nov 29: Gambling, nude dance and raffle draw (lottery) has been going on in full swing in the name of Hemanta fair in Shahebganj Bazar of the highway road side under Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj district since long. As a result, incidents of thefts, snatching have increased alarmingly in the areas threatening law and order situation. Study of all examinees and other students is being hampered due to loud speakers and sound pollution. Sources said all kinds of yearly examination have been going on across the country and all examinations of primary schools, high schools and kinder garden schools will start from December this year but the candidates' preparation for the examination is being hampered due to the Mela. Tickets of Raffle draw are being sold everywhere in the upazila of the district. Conscious people said that Rafle draw is one of the worst gamblings. Most of the people are collecting a ticket worth Tk 20 to get alluring prizes. Day labourers are purchasing tickets with their earned money and returning home empty handed every day. On the other hand, drug dealers are selling yaba, heroin, phensidyl, ganja and liquor around the Hemanta mela. Source also said, two groups are vying for establishing supremacy on the mela premises. At any moment a feud may erupt and an untoward situation may arise in the area. Local people demand an immediate ban on the Hemanta mela to save the young generation from derailment and they seek interference of the prime minister to stop the fair. When asked about gambling and other anti-social activities in the mela the officer in-charge of Salanga police station told The News Today that he has information on Hemanta mela but does not know about the anti-social activities and gambling. The Officer-in-Charge also said that they are trying to stop the mela.
