Left parties' hartal today

The left-leaning parties will enforce an eight-hour hartal from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm on Thursday protesting the fresh power price hike, reports UNB. Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Socialist Party of Bangladesh (BSD) jointly called the hartal on November 23 soon after the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) raised power tariff by 5.3 percent or Tk. 0.35 per unit on a weighted average, which will come into effect from December. Earlier on September 1, the price for electricity was raised by 2.93 percent on average. BNP on Wednesday extended its full support to the eight-hour hartal to be enforced by left-leaning parties on Thursday protesting the fresh power tariff hike. Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken adequate security measures so that no unpleasant incident takes place during the hartal hours in the capital. Adequate number of police will be deployed at a number of strategic city points so that movements of city dwellers as well as vehicles remain smooth during the hartal hours, said Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP Masudur Rahman.
