Farmers eye bumper aromatic rice yield in Netrakona

NETRAKONA, Nov 29: District Agriculture Extension Department (DAED) and farmers here hoped that over 21,000 tons of aromatic rice would be produced in the district this session, reports BSS. The aromatic rice is popularly known as BRRI-34, Kalozira, Tulsimala, Chinishail and Nunia. DAED officials today said 10,000 hectors of land have been fixed target to bring under cultivation of the sweet-smelling rice this year. Many cultivators of the district had been showing their keen interest for the last several years for producing the export quality rice on their farm and fellow lands due to high demand and getting better price, they also said. “The rice growers were provided with the information about modern methods of rice cultivation and maintaining standard quality of rice by the DAED agriculture experts and field-workers” they added. Deputy Director of the DAED Bilash Chandra Paul said that farmers produced 20,000 tons of the rice last year and they earned more cash by marketing the rice. Many farmers have been showing interest for producing the aromatic rice this year after getting huge yield and seeing the high demand of the rice in the markets, he added. Talking to the BSS, many rice growers of the district said they got improved quality seeds, fertilizers and agricultural equipments at their door-steps from different state-run organisations including BADC and BCIC for making their rice cultivation program successful.
