Post-flood agri-rehab for farmers in Rangpur regio

RANGPUR, Sept 20: The government has taken massive post-flood agriculture rehabilitation programmes to assist flood-hit farmers recouping crop losses they incurred during recent floods in Rangpur agriculture region, reports BSS. Under the programme, huge incentives in terms of seed and fertilisers worth Taka 10.37 crore will be distributed among 92,769 flood-hit farmers of five flood-affected districts in the region. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said distribution of incentives would begin soon to assist each of the beneficiary farmers cultivating eight varieties of crops on one bigha (33 decimals) of land. “We have already distributed late variety Aman seed among 350 farmers and seedling among 3,100 flood-hit marginal farmers for re-transplantation of seedling on 3,450 bigha of land in addition to these incentives,” said Regional Additional Director of DAE Shah Alam. “The beneficiary farmers will cultivate crops during Kharip-2 and Rabi seasons after getting five to 20-kg seed, 10 to 20-kg Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and five to 15-kg Muriate of Potash (MoP) fertilisers each depending on crop variety,” he added. According to DAE officials, the government has allocated 725 tonnes of seed of eight varieties of crops and 1,725 tonnes of DAP and 883 tonnes of MoP fertilisers worth Taka 10.37 crore for distribution free of costs among 92,763 affected farmers in the region. The flood-hit farmers will cultivate wheat on 28,500 bigha of land, maize on 32,450 bigha, mustard on 18,000 bigha, groundnut on 225 bigha, ‘Til’ on 750 bigha, ‘Mashkalai’ on 9,200 bigha and BT brinjal on 144 bigha of land with the incentives. Under the programme, 570 tonnes of wheat seed, 570 tonnes of DAP and 285 tonnes of MoP fertilisers will be distributed among 28,500 farmers for wheat cultivation. The DAE distribute will distribute 65 tonnes of maize seed among 32,450 farmers, 19 tonnes of mustard seed among 18,000 farmers, two-tonnes of groundnut seed among 225 farmers, one-tonne of ‘Til’ seed among 750 farmers and 20 tonnes of mungbean seed among 3,500 farmers. “Besides, 47 tonnes of ‘Mashkalai’ seed will be distributed among 9,200 farmers and 2.88-kg of BT brinjal seed among 144 farmers,” said Md Moniruzzaman, Deputy Director of DAE at its regional office. “The government incentives will assist 17,418 flood-hit farmers of Rangpur, 21,180 of Gaibandha, 24,699 of Kurigram, 14,724 of Lalmonirhat and 14,748 farmers of Nilphamari to recoup crop losses they incurred during recent floods,” he added.
