ICT innovations to improve services

This is the digital age and the age of Information Technology. Bangladesh has to utilise ICT techniques for rapid improvement in public services to attain socio-economic development. Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury on Thursday stressed the need for promoting Information Communication Technology (ICT) based innovations to enhance quality of public services.
"New ICT innovations will eventually ensure good governance in the country," she told an award giving ceremony of Service Innovation Fund (SIF) in the conference room of Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).Access to Information (A2I) Programme for the first time introduced Service Innovation Fund award. Seven institutions were given Service Innovation Fund for their outstanding innovations.US Ambassador to Bangladesh , UNDP Country Director and officials of different ministries and organizations and A2I programme, among others, addressed the function with finance secretary in the chair. Five government institutions, one NGO and one private university got the SIF award.
The new innovations in government, private and individual levels will help ease and quicken public service delivery system. Both the public and private organizations have to gear up their efforts in developing new innovations to supplement the government efforts to build digital Bangladesh. Bangladesh already has made great strides into the Digital era and the country has digital access to key government services such as land titling, birth registration, university application.
There has now been 'Online based service enhancement', soil Resource Development Institute for 'Online fertilizer recommendation: automation of data processing and data updating' along with 'development of multimedia transport web portal with mobile interactivity. Also digital techniques are being used for insurance claim payment service. Young Power Social Action (UPSA) has produced multimedia digital talking book. There has been development of a Bangla optical character recognizer. All of these achievements in our country have improved services of the public and private sector and forwarded our progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
